MRS. MARTHA SMALL

Mrs. Martha Painter Small was born in Lawrence county, Pennsylvania, Feb. 6, 1831 and departed this life for her heavenly home March 4, 1918, at the age of 87 years and 26 days.

She was united in marriage on May 4, 1854 to James Small, who preceded her 11 years ago. To this union were born seven children: Mrs. George F. Pierce of Chicago, Mrs. Hannah Patterson of St. Charles, Mrs. George Robinson and J. C. Shields, both of Baker City, Ore and John and Emma Small, who resided with their mother and with loving care, tenderly ministered to her in her declining years.

All were present at her bedside in her last illness except Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. Shields and one son, William James, who responded to his country's call during the Spanish-American war, and who passed away in the Philippines.

She was the last of her family, her four brothers preceeding her, the last two, John and Joshua Painter, having passed away during the last year.

She was a member of the M. E. church, but because of her health and extreme age has not been able to attend church for a number of years; this however, did not prevent her doing all that she could in her Master's name.

Funeral services were held in the M. E. church Friday afternoon an interment was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
