ELLEN MELROY OF WINTERSET DIES

Death Occurs Sunday After Extended Period of Failing Health

Mrs. Ellen Melroy died at her home in Winterset Sunday, Aug. 26, after lingering illness. She was 69 years of age, and had been in failing health since June.

Mrs. Melroy was a member of a pioneer family in Union township, and spent her entire life in Madison county, with the exception of four years in Colorado. She was the former Ellen Theresa Monaghan, daughter of Edward and Ellen Conway Monaghan. She was born in Union township on Feb. 20, 1882.

She was married Oct. 2, 1901, to Frank P. Melroy. Their married life was spent in Union township, with the exception of the four years in Colorado. Mr. Melroy died in 1917.

Mrs. Melroy continued to make her home in Union township, after the death of her husband, until seven years ago, when she moved to Winterset, which since had been her home.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset, and had been active in its affairs over a long period of years.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Agnes Anderson of San Antonio, Tex., and Sister Frances Marie of the Humility of Mary order at Ottumwa; and seven sons, Edward and Francis Melroy at home, Thomas Melroy of Davenport, James Melroy of Denver, Walter Melroy, a chief petty officer in the U.S. navy, now stationed in Japan, John Melroy of Adel, and Charles Melroy of Des Moines. She also leaves 17 grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. P. J. Cunningham of Winterset and Mrs. Joe Nolan of Westphalia, Kansas.

Rosary services were held Monday night for Mrs. Melroy at the Richards Funeral home here, and funeral services were Tuesday morning, at St. Joseph's church with requiem high Mass in charge of the pastor, the Rev. J. J. Judge. Burial was made in St. Patrick's cemetery in Lee township.
