Death Ends Long Illness for Well-Known Resident of This Community
Mrs. D. M. Griswold, a resident of Madison county since 1876, died Saturday, July 21, at the Memorial hospital. She was 80 years of age. Mrs. Griswold's death followed an extended illness. She had entered the Memorial hospital nine months ago, following a stroke, and had been under care there since that time.
She was the former Lula Ellen Piatt, daughter of Jacob and Emeline Nelson Piatt. She was born Feb. 2, 1871, at Cambridge, Ill., and came with her parents to Madison county when she was five years old. The family settled in Penn township, where her early life was spent.
She was married March 11, 1891, at Earlham, to D. M. Griswold. With the exception of eight years spent in Perry and Des Moines, their long married life together was spent in Madison county. Since 1915 their home had been in Winterset.
Mr. and Mrs. Griswold were the parents of two children. Their daughter, Alice Marie, died in 1918.
During her residence in Winterset, Mrs. Griswold was active as long as her helath permitted, in the First Presbyterian church, and in various women's clubs.
Surviving are her husband; her son, Dr. G. H. Griswold; a grandson, Dr. David Griswold; all of Winterset; a granddaughter, Mrs. Helen Misner of Des Moines; and a great grandson.
Funeral services were held Monday from the First Presbyterian church here, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. Clement D. Loehr. Burial was made in the Penn Center cemetery.
