Fatally Injured in Leap From Windmill at Farm Home

Mrs. Frank E. Smith, a well known former resident of Madison county, died at the Mary Greeley hospital in Ames Tuesday night, June 26 at the age of 44 years. She had been fatally injured in a suicide leap from the windmill at her home near Nevada a few hours earlier.

Mrs. Smith was the former Alta Marie Olson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Olson. She was born April 14, 1907, in the Worthington community of this county. They later lived near Pitzer.

After graduating from the Winterset high school with the class of 1925, she taught rural schools in Madison county for several years. She was married to Frank E. Smith on Dec. 3, 1927. They lived in Flint, Mich. for several years before returning to Madison county to operate the Pitzer telephone exchange. From 1933 to 1949 they had farmed in Madison and Warren counties.

At the age of 10 years she had united with the Early Chapel Church of Christ and at her death was a member of the Nevada Christian church. Throughout her life she was active in church and Sunday school work.

She is survived by her husband; their three children, Mrs. Donna Thomas and Mrs. Darlene Iverson of Norwalk and Lawrence Smith of Nevada; two grandchildren; her mother, Mrs. Velma Olson of Winterset; a sister, Mrs. Harold Beaman of Earlham; and two brothers, Lawrence Olson of Williston Park, N. Y., and Edwin Olson of Lansing, Ill.
