Services for Clair Winfield Rogers, 72, Macksburg, who died Feb. 22 at the Bethesda Care Center, were held at the First Baptist Church in Winterset with the Rev. Peter Quiring and Richard Sissel officiating. Burial was at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Webster township.

Born in Webster township on Sept. 25, 1913, he was the son of Charles and Mae Belle Hatfield Rogers. He was a self-employed farmer for 30 years and also was a house mover. He helped in moving some of the covered bridges in Madison County and was an expert on their construction.

A veteran of the Sea Bees in World War II, he was a member of the Fellowship Church, a board member of the Stanzel Christian Church School and a Sunday school teacher at the church.

On July 22, 1941, he was married to Nola Faye Killion at Columbia, Mo.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Alvin Dale Rogers of Santa Ana, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Fred (Roberta) Silverthorn of Macksburg; a brother, Leslie Rogers of Tacoma, Wash.; sisters, Ethel Jeff of Union, Mo., Fern Davis of St. James, Mo., Aletha Miller of Denver, Colo., and Esther Rust of Aurora, Colo.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son and a daughter.

Clair Winfield Rogers was born on September 25, 1913 north of Macksburg, Madison County, Iowa, the second son of Charles and Belle Hatfield Rogers. He passed away February 22, 1986 at the Bethesda Care Center, Winterset, Iowa; reaching the age of 72 years.

Clair attended public school in the Macksburg and Winterset areas.

As a young man Clair worked as a farm hand. During the harvest season he would work in the Kansas and Minnesota areas.

On July 22, 1941 he was united in marriage to Nola Faye Killion, of Orient, Iowa. They were married in the Methodist parsonage in Columbia, Missouri. They established their home in Madison County. To this union were born two sons and two daughters: Alvin Dale, David Stanley, Roberta Paulette and Melinda Eugene.

Clair answered his call to go into the service in World War II in August 1942. He chose the Sea Bees Navy Construction getting his discharge in the fall of 1945.

After his discharge he bought the house moving business and continued to move buildings, covered bridges and do basement work until his retirement in 1982.

Clair accepted the Lord as his personal Savior in 1948 and continued to serve the Lord. He was a member of the Fellowship Church where he taught Sunday school and quite often filled the pulpit as lay preacher. He was chairman of the board at Stanzel Christian School. For the last two years he had been doing janitorial work at the school. He also held Bible studies.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Nola son Dale and wife Charlene of Santa Ana, California, daughter Roberta and husband Fred Silverthorn of Macksburg, Iowa; one grandson, Darren Rogers of Santa Ana, California; five granddaughters, Yvette and Anita Rogers of Santa Ana, California, Bobi Jo, Melissa and Tabitha Silverthorn of Macksburg, Iowa; one brother, Leslie and his wife Glee of Tacoma, Washington; four sisters, Ethel Jeffs of Union, Missouri, Fern Davis and husband Jim of St. James, Missouri, Aletha Miller and husband Herman of Denver, Colorado, and Esther Rusk and husband of Aurora, Colorado.

His parents, son Stanley, daughter Melinda and two brothers, Elmer and Riley have preceded him in death.

Funeral services were conducted February 26, 1986 at First Baptist Church, Winterse, Iowa, with Mr. Richard Sissel and Pastor Peter Quiring officiating. Music was provided by the Silverthorn Family with Jeanie Saylor as organist. Honorary casket bearers were Milford Blomquist, Ernest Burgmaier, Hubert Dahl, Leland Hope and Robert Witt. Casket bearers were Ralph Breakenridge, Lonnie Burgmaier, John Mahan, Lloyd Sankey, Clarence Swartz and Estel Welch. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Madison County, Iowa.
