John Harrison Slaton, 49, of Truro died of a heart attack Aug. 15, 1998, at Mercy Hosital Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Kale Funeral Home in Truro with the Rev. Joan White officiating. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date.
John Slaton was born Aug. 22, 1948, in Brawley, Calif., to William Porter and Urith Kathryn Slaton. He received his education from Madison High School in Madison, Mo., and graduated from Northeast Missouri State University in 1970. On Sept. 18, 1976, he married Sandra Lee Graham in Des Moines. John had resided in Truro for approximately eight years. He had previously lived in Indiana and Pennsylvania while employed with Central Tractor for over 20 years. He currently was employed with Wal-Mart in Des Moines. He was a member of A.A. in Winterset, a former Jaycee member in Indiana and a member of the Duncans Bridge Methodist Church in Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.
He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Melissa Lynn Slaton of Truro; one son, Thomas William Slaton, also of Truro; his parents of Madison, Mo.; one sister, Esther Shultheiss (husband David) of Kirksville, Mo.; one brother, James Porter Slaton of Madison Mo.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

John Harrison Slaton, son of William Porter and Urith Kathryn Slaton and Willima Porter Slaton, was born Aug. 22, 1948, in Brawley, Calif. and died Aug. 15, 1998, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. He was 49.
Mr. Harrison attended the Madison Missouri C-3 High School and graduated from Northeast Missouri State University in 1970.
He married Sandra Lee Graham on Sept. 18, 1976 in Des Moines. The couple became the parents of two children, Melissa and Thomas.
He worked for Central Tractor Company for more than 20 years and lived in various places around the country, including Pennsylvania and Indiana. He moved to Truro eight years ago and had been employed at Wal-Mart in Des Moines.
Mr. Harrison was member of Alcoholics Anonymous in Winterset, a former Jaycee member and a member of the Duncans Bridge Methodist Church in Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Alva and James Harrison and Roberta and John Slaton.
Mr. Harrison is survived by his wife, Sandra; a daughter, Melissa Lynn Slaton; a son, Thomas William Slaton of Truro; his parents, Kathryn and Porter Slaton of Madison, Mo.; his sister, Esther Shultheiss and her husband David Shultheiss of Kirksville, Mo; his brother, James Porter Slaton of Madison, Mo.; many aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends.
Services were held Aug. 18 at Kale Funeral Home in Truro with Pastor Joan White officiating. Organist Anne Johnson played Rock of Ages.
Honorary casket bearers were Mike Graham, Chris Nehring, Paul Unterbrink, Don Brownlee, Carl Nehring and Tracy Morgan.
Interment of cremains will be at a later date.
