Mrs. Marquis E. Smith, former Winterset resident, died at the home of her son, Marquis M. Smith at Crystal Lake, Ill., last Wednesday evening, Nov. 30th after an extended illness. Mrs. Smith had been in poor health, with heart trouble and complications for a number of years, but a severe stroke caused her sudden death last week.
Mrs. Smith, who was the former Marion A. McLeod, came to Winterset in 1894, following her marriage to Mr. Smith, who was a druggist here, and later cashier of the Winterset Savings bank. The Smiths made their home in Winterset until after his death in 1933. Since then she has resided with their only son and his wife in Oak Park, and later in Crystal Lake, Ill.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Winterset, and also of the Order of Eastern Star and the Woman's club.
In addition to the son, Mrs. Smith leaves a grandson, Marquis, III.
Brief funeral services were held followed by cremation last week. Burial will be in the Winterset cemetery next spring.

Private burial services for Mrs. M. E. Smith, former Winterset resident, who died at Crystal Lake, Ill. last fall were conducted at the Winterset cemetery Saturday morning by the Rev. Clement ----, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Mrs. Smith, whose late husband was a former druggist and later a banker here, has resided in Oak Park and Crystal Lake, Ill., with her son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Marquis M. Smith since the death of Mr. Smith.
She is survived by the son and his wife, who accompanied the remains to Winterset.
