Services for Joseph W. Smith, 72, Earlham, who died Dec. 26, 1986, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center, were held Dec. 30 at St. John's Catholic Church in Adel with the Rev. Anthony Aiello officiating. Burial was at Earlham Cemetery.
Born Aug. 5, 1914 in Warren County near Bevington, he was the son of John Joseph and Mary Francis Smith. He grew up around Van Meter, but moved to Dexter where he met and married Martha Hill on Aug. 6, 1937 at St. Joseph's Church in Winterset. After living in Dexter for 10 years they moved to a farm south of Earlham where they lived for 37 years.
Mr. Smith farmed all his life and worked at the sale barns in Adel and Winterset for nearly 30 years. He was a 4-H leader for several years and was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Adel
Survivors include his wife, Martha; a daughter, Jane Allsup and husband Larry of Stuart; a daughter-in-law, Donna Smith of Earlham; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Earlham, IowaJoseph William Smith, son of John Joseph (Joe) and Mary Francis (Minnie) Smith, was born August 5, 1914 in Warren County near Bevington, Iowa and passed away on December 26, 1986 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
Joe grew up around Van Meter, then moved to Dexter where he met and married Martha Hill August 6, 1937 in Winterset at St. Joseph’s. To this union were born two children, Willis and Jane. After living in Dexter for 10 years they moved to a farm south of Earlham where they lived for 37 years. Joe farmed all his life and worked at the sale barns in Adel and Winterset for nearly 30 years. He also enjoyed being a 4-H leader for several years. Joe was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Adel. Two years ago Joe and Martha moved into Earlham where Joe enjoyed watching activities from their front porch.
He was preceded in death by his son Willis, his parents and two sisters. His survivors are his wife Martha; daughter Jane Allsup and husband Larry of Stuart; daughter-in-law Donna Smith of Earlham; seven grandchildren, Larry Jo, Genise, David, Rodney, Cindy, Shelley and Mark; five great grandchildren and several cousins.
Mass was held December 30, 1986 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Adel, Iowa, with Father Anthony Aiello officiating. Organist was Donna Belle Miller. Pallbearers were Nile York, William Forret, Rick Dupuy, Dillon Merical, Roy Stewart and Darrell Adams. Interment was in Earlham Cemetery, Earlham, Iowa.
