Emma Crowl Funeral Held at Bear Creek

Emma Crowl, sister of Mrs. E. S. Day and a former resident of this community, passed away Saturday, December 9, at a nursing home at Stuart. She had been in ill health for a number of years and for the past several weeks had been failing.

She was the daughter of Eli and Anna Jane Barnett Compton, and grew up in the Bear Creek neighborhood. She is survived by one son, Chester Crowl and his family, one brother, Elmer Compton and three sisters, Sydna Day of Earlham; Olive Bennett of Adel and Hattie Stubbs of Mason City.

Her husband, Charles Crowl and one son, Charles Jr. passed away some years ago. Funeral services were conducted from the Bear Creek church, Monday afternoon, with Lawrence Sams and Arthur W. Hadley in charge.

Casket bearers were: Ivan Compton, Carroll Bennett, H. E. Pickett, Fremont Hadley, Willard Hadley and Willard Barnett. Mrs. Walter Mapes and Mrs. Leo Conrad were the singers. Mrs. Willard Hadley accompanied them. Burial was in the Bear Creek cemetery.

OBITUARY

Emma Orene Compton daughter of Eli and Anna Jane Compton was born April 3, 1869 near Dexter, Iowa and departed this life on December 9, 1950 in Stuart, Iowa at the age of 81 years, eight months and six days.

She attended the school near her home and later the Dexter Normal School. Then teaching a few terms of school until her marriage to Charles M. Crowl on September 19, 1895.

To this union were born four children, Chester F., Orval who passed away in infancy, Lucille V., who died at the age of twenty months and Charles H., who died at the age of twenty-two years in 1931. Her husband preceded her in death in February, 1909.

She was a birth right member of the Bear Creek Friends church where she was a Charter member of the young peoples Christian Endeavor, always taking an active part. When she moved to Earlham in 1908 she changed her membership to the Earlham Friends church.

During a life of many changes and sorrows she endeavored to meet what ever came with courage. She was devoted to her children and grandchildren. She truly loved the church and always attended when her health permitted.

She is survived by her son, Chester and his wife, Hazel, four grandchildren, a step son, Clarence Crowl and his family all of Redfield. Also surviving are one brother, Elmer Compton of Earlham, and three sisters, Olive Bennett of Adel, Sydna Day of Earlham, and Harriett Stubbs of Mason City, Iowa.
