Earlham Funeral For GLEN F. SMITH

Glen F. Smith, of Earlham died at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines, Friday evening, March 8, 1968, after an illness of several months. Mr. Smith was a native of Madison county, being a son of William John and Sadie Ford Smith and was born in Jackson township, June 28, 1894.

He was raised in Jackson township, and during World War I, he served with the 210th Engineers, and was a member of the American Legion and Presbyterian church.

His marriage to Maud Frederick of Webster township, was solemnized, March 10th, 1920. They were the parents of three children, who with the mother survive him; Dale Smith of Phoenix, Arizona, Martha Van Toll and Keith Smith of Appleton, Wisconsin. Ten grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive.

In March 1936, Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved to a farm near Wausaukee, Wisconsin where they resided until 1951. The eleven following years they resided in Appleton, where Mr. Smith was employed at Lawrence college. Upon his retirement in August 1962 they moved to Earlham, where they have since resided.

In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, he also leaves one brother and four sisters: Frank E. Smith of Nevada, Mrs. Helen Wright of Granger, Mrs. Bess Clampitt of Earlham, Mrs. Laura Black of St. Charles, and Mrs. Gertrude Shoemaker of Winterset.

The Rev. Gene Kinney conducted the funeral service, at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 11th, at the Presbyterian church in Earlham. Burial was in the Earlham cemetery.

Glenn F. Smith was born June 28, 1894 in Madison County, Winterset, Iowa. HIs grandfather was a sailor from Ballyroney, County Down in Ireland. John McMurray Smith settled in Boston, Massachusetts in 1861, moving his family to Iowa in 1869.

Glenn served in the 210th Engineer Crop in World War I.

He married Maud E. Frederick in 1920 in Webster [former town in Madison County],Iowa. They moved to High Falls (Crivitz), Wisconsin in 1936, then to a farm in White Rapids in April of 1937. Glenn helped to build the "Church of the Brethren" (as it was called) in the White Rapids area. Mr. Smith farmed most of his adult life, moving to Appleton in 1951 to work for Lawrence College (now University).

The Smiths retired to Earlham, Iowa where Glenn died in March 1968. Glenn and Maud had three children: Dale, Martha, and Keith.

Maud was born in Webster, Madison County, Iowa on August 4. 1901. One of her home making talents was sewing and kept her family well dressed even during the hard times. Mrs. Smith now resided in a retirement care center in Phoenix, Arizona near Dale and Martha. Keith is in Appleton.
