GEORGE D. SMITH Services Held

Retired St. Charles real estate and insurance agent, George Dewey Smith, 78, died July 14, 1977, at the Madison County Hospital. Born June 15, 1899 in Clarke County, son of William D. and Etta Holmes Smith. Mr. Smith was educated in the Truro schools.

On June 25, 1919 he married Hazel Archer in St. Charles. In real estate and insurance until his retirement in 1963, Mr. Smith was a charter member of the Lion's Club and 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge(Model Lodge No. 315 A.F.& A.M.) and Eastern Star (Model Chapter No. 174 O.E.S.)

Survivors include his wife, Hazel, of St. Charles; two daughters, Mrs. Dean (Arlouine) Hoskins of St. Charles and Mrs. Don (Joyce) Brideson of Marietta, Georgia; son, Franklin Smith of San Antonio, Texas; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Ormil Smith of Auburn, California and two sisters, Fern Mahaffa of Aptos, California and Faye Yeaman of Wadsworth, Ohio.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Hassell, Russell and Larro.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 20 at the United Methodist Church in St. Charles. Rev. Paul Hann of Winterset officiated. Burial was made at the St. Charles Cemetery.

George Smith Rites July 20

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 20, for George Dewey Smith, 78, who died at his home in St. Charles on Thursday, July 14. The Rev. Paul Hann of Winterset will conduct the 10 a.m. service from the United Methodist Church in St. Charles. Interment will be in St. Charles Cemetery.

George Dewey Smith was born June 15, 1899, in Clarke County, Iowa, son of William D. Smith and Etta Holmes Smith. He attended schools in Truro and on June 25, 1919, was married to Hazel Archer in St. Charles. Three children were born to this union. He was in the real estate and insurance business form 1920 to 1963, retiring at that time. He was a charter member of the St. Charles Lions Club, held a 50 year membership with the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star, was a member and Model Chapter 174 O.E.S. and Model Lodge A.F. & A.M. he was affiliated with the United Methodist Church in St. Charles.
