Page 5, column 2FERNE SMITH Of Macksburg Dies
Mrs. Ferne Smith, a resident of the Macksburg community for 80 years, died recently at a Creston nursing home at the age of 86 years.
Mrs. Smith was the former Anna Ferne Hilbery, daughter of John and Julia Hilbery. She was born on a farm near Macksburg. Her father died when she was young, and her mother later married Cass Pindell. She lived with them until 1900, when she was married to Earl Smith, who preceded her in death.
She was a charter member of the Wayside Garden club and Woman's Relief corps at Macksburg, and a long-time member of the Women's society for Christian Service.
For the last six years she has made her home in the Creston nursing home where her death occurred.
She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Smith of Orient and Clifford Smith of Macksburg; and four grandchildren, James Smith of Atlantic, Mrs. Mary Haughenbaugh of Des Moines, Mrs. Shirley Binning of Grand River and Darwin Smith of Des Moines; and 12 great grandchildren.
