Pioneer Woman Dies At 96 Years

Mrs. Clara Jane Smith Had Lived in Madison County Since Infancy

Mrs. Clara Jane Smith, one of Madison county's oldest residents, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 1960, at the age of 96 years. Her death occurred at the home of her daugher, Mrs. T. E. Coffman of Webster township.

Mrs. Smith had spent practically all her long life as a resident of Madison county. She was the former Clara Jane Weeks, daughter of George and Rachel Jeffers Weeks. She was born in Warren county, Illinois, on Aug. 13, 1864, and came to Madison county as an infant.

She was married Sept. 8, 1887, to Thomas E. Smith. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Pleasant View Methodist church in Webster township.

She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Coffman of near Winterset and Mrs. Floyd Denny of Stuart; five grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. She was the eldest of a family of 14 children, 11 of whom have preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held Friday from the Anderson-Wilson Funeral home in Winterset, in charge of the Rev. Richard Ludden of the Oak Grove church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery. Her great grandsons served as pallbearers.
