BESSIE M. SMITH, Winterset

Services for Bessie M. Smith, 98, Winterset, who died Oct. 27 at the Care Center North where she resided, were held Monday, Oct. 30, at the Collins Funeral Home with the Rev. Zona Lautt officiating. Burial was at the Winterset Cemetery.

Born at Cambridge, Ill., on Oct. 6, 1891, she was the daughter of George and Laura Strohecker Long. She was married to Carl O. Smith on April 30, 1913 and farmed in Madison County and lived in St. Charles for many years.

Survivors include five grandchildren, Janice Grondahl of Roanoke, Texas, Jean Smith of Winter Haven, Fla., Judy Smith of Naples, Fla., Gary Smith of Denver, Colo., and Ron Smith of Ankeny; sisters, Gladys Merkle of Puyallup, Wash.; a niece Erma Henley of LeRoy, Kan.; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a son, a brother and three sisters.
