ALFRED J. SMITH, Earlham

Services for Alfred J. Smith, 69, of Earlham, who died of cancer Saturday at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Des Moines, were held Tuesday (today) at the Church of Christ in Earlham. Burial was at the Booneville Cemetery.

Born in Van Meter, Mr. Smith farmed near Van Meter and Earlham all of his life.

Survivors include his wife, Anna; a daughter, Sharon Ethell of Carlisle; two sons, Ronald of Earlham and Randall of California; six sisters, Agnes Loose of DeSoto, Alice Hazen of Van Meter, Hazel Stewart of Earlham, Irene Kelly of Winterset, Margaret Olson of Des Moines, and Mary Ann Dawson of Dallas Center; and 10 grandchildren.

Alfred John Smith, son of Alfred C. Smith and Anna Forret, was born June 10, 1914 at Van Meter, Iowa and passed away November 19, 1983. Alfred graduated from Van Meter High School and farmed all his life around Van Meter and Earlham. He moved to a farm north of Earlham in 1948 and resided there until 1975 when he moved to Earlham due to this health.

Alfred is survived by his wife, Anna, one daughter, Sharon Ethell of Carlisle, two sons, Ronald of Earlham and Randall of the U.S. Navy in California, 10 grandchildren, six sisters, Agnes Loose of DeSoto, Alice Hazen, Van Meter, Hazel Stewart, Earlham, Irene Kelly of Winterset, Margaret Olson of Des Moines and Mary Ann Dawson of Dallas Center. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Opal in 1972, and two children in infancy and one brother. Services were held Tuesday, November 22, 1983 at the Church of Christ in Earlham with Pastor Earl Menning officiating. Music was provided by Julie Leniton, organist. Pallbearers were Albert Fagen, Lyle Stewart, Alan Olson, Jerry Cairns, Jerry College, Ronald Thomas. Interment was at Booneville Cemetery in Booneville, Iowa.
