BESSIE M. SMITH, New Sharon

Bessie Mae Smith, 92, of New Sharon died Feb. 17, 2001, at Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 18, at Harden Funeral Home in New Sharon with the Rev. Dennis Hopes officiating. Burial was at Highland Cemetery in New Sharon.

Bessie Smith was born Feb. 18, 1908, to Joseph N. and Mary E. (Brown) Olson of rural Winterset. A 1926 graduate of Winterset High School she began teaching in one-room schools in the Winterset area. At this time, she also took correspondence courses from Northwest Missouri State and Drake University. On Oct. 18, 1941, she was united in marriage to Arthur Smith in Nebraska. Following their marriage, they resided on the Smith family farm near Winterset. A resident of New Sharon since 1961, Bessie had been a member of the United Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school, a member of the Missionary Marthas and was a former 4-H leader in Winterset.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers.

She is survived by a daughter, Helen Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, James Smith (wife Kari) of Lacey; a sister, Lucile White of Winterset; a brother, Glenn "Pete" Olson of McAllen, Texas; and a grandson.
