LEVI T. TOWNSEND

Levi T. Townsend was born Sept. 30, 1845 at Pickerel Town, Logan county, Ohio, and died in Macksburg, July 25, 1923 at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 25 days.

In the year 1866 at Maringo, Ohio, he was united in marriage with Miss Lois L. Thompson, who preceded him in death on July 7, 1899. To this union four children were born: Edwin L. of Des Moines, Mrs. John Callison of Macksburg, Burton L., now deceased and Mrs. Jennie Canning of Des Moines.

On Oct. 3, 1900 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Estelle E. Elton of Des Moines, who survives him.

Besides his wife and the above named children he is survived by five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; also two brothers, Benjamin of Clinton, Mo., and Edwin of Denver, Colo.

At the age of 11, he enlisted in Co. K, 9th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry and served in the Civil War. Later he was one of the organizers of J. D. Craven Post, G.A.R., of Macksburg and was active as long as it existed. He was also a member of the local Masonic lodge.

Mr. Townsend came to Macksburg in October, 1877 and engaged in the general merchandise business. He has held various positions of trust in the life and work of the community. In April, 1915, he united with the Macksburg M. E. church, of which he was a member at the time of his death.
