MAN KILLED IN HUNTING ACCIDENT

Clarence C. Rhone Found in Timber Near Elm Grove

Clarence C. Rhone, aged 75, of Winterset, was found dead in a wooded area of Scott township, just north of the Elm Grove church, Tuesday night, the victim of a hunting accident. Indications are that he had been dead since Sunday.

Rhone was found on a farm owned by Lester Janes, just north of Elm Grove, by Janes and his son-in-law, Clarence Cooper. The elderly man was last seen alive in Winterset Sunday. Janes had noticed his car parked by the side of the road there since Sunday. This Tuesday, Janes called Sherriff Rex Rouse. They searched the area for an hour and a half without success. The sheriff returned to his car to call Winterset, while Janes and Cooper continued the search. They found the body about 7:30 p.m.

Rhone had been hunting with a .22 caliber rifle. The rifle appeared to have discharged accidentally, the slug hitting Rhone above the left eye. It did not appear to be a fatal wound, but probably rendered the victim unconsious, and he died of exposure.

County Coroner Paul Eggleston was called, and after investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, termed it accidental.

Mr. Rhone was a farmer during his active years. He was born in Union county on August 19, 1881, a son of James and Sarah Cornelison Rhone. His wife the former Clara Dennis, died in 1944. He lived at Peru and Lorimor, and had been living here since last summer.

He is survived by five children, Elmer Rhone of Des Moines, Mrs. Vera Bubb of Astoria, Ill., Mrs. Ula Wilson of Overland Park, Kan., Mrs. Eunice Cooper of St. Charles, and Mrs. Claracy Exline of Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the Meethodist church in Lorimor, with burial in the Lorimor cemetery.
