Vivian "Swanie" June Randel, 79 of Winterset died May 22, 2003 at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset of sudden cardiac arrest.

Funeral services were held Tuesday May 27, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset with Pastor Steve Koch officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Swanie Randel was born Aug. 14, 1923 in Des Moines to Ernest Stevens and Heloise (Barrett) Stevens. Her first marriage was to Robert O. Swanson. She later was united in marriage to Kenneth E. Randel on Oct. 4, 1986 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Swanie had been a nurse at Younkers Rehabilitation Center in Des Moines before retiring. A resident of Winterset since 1986, she had previously lived in Des Moines. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset and the St. Paul Quilt Club. She also was an advocate for the West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation Center in Winterset.

She was preceded in death by her father; her mother; and a sister, Evelyn Carter.

She is survived by her husband Kenneth of Winterset; a son, Robert P. Swanson of Winterset; three daughters, Karen Powell of Winterset, Karlene Stokka of Lorimor and Kay Mitchell of Arvada, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Jeanne Jensen of Brandon, S.D.; two stepsons, Gary Randel of Panora and Greg Randel of Ankeny; 12 grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to her family. Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
