EMMA RAMSEY

Emma Garrett Ramsey was the daughter of Evan and Lydia Hockett Garrett. She was born in Dallas County, Iowa, on March 29, 1873. She grew up in the neighborhood northeast of Earlham known as Garrettville, attending the country school near her home.

On December 22, 1897, she was united in marriage with Walter V. Ramsey. To them were born three daughters: Helen, Hilda and Lois. She was left a widow by the death of her husband in 1937.

She and her family moved to Earlham in 1913, and the remainder of her life has been spent in and around this community. She became a member of the Earlham Friends church in 1918 and continued a member until her death.

Emma was a good wife and mother, and a kind neighbor. She loved her home and family and gave herself selfishly in their behalf. She loved the beauty of the flowers and spent much time in cultivating them in her garden and home.

For the last few years she has made her home with her sister, Myrtle Garrett of Earlham. Though failing health kept her confined to her home for some time, she remained interested in her friends and in the church. On the morning of December 10, 1961, she slipped quietly away in her sleep.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, her daughter, Helen Fry, two brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her sister, Myrtle Garrett, two daughters, Hilda Neff of Flushing, Michigan and Lois Barr of Winterset. She leaves also, to cherish her memory five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
