George William "Bill" Ramsay, 78, died May 10, 2002, in Prescott, Ariz.
A celebration of his life will be held in Prescott sometime in June.
Bill Ramsay was born Jan. 5, 1924 in Glendora, Calif., to George Nathan and Minnie Rosetta (Manhardt) Ramsay. He was raised in Knoxville, Iowa. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II and the Battle of the Bulge. He received a degree in agriculture education at Iowa State University and a master's degree in international agriculture development at Michigan State University. Following graduation from Iowa State, Bill joined the Iowa Extension Service and spent several years in Winterset, where he stayed until 1954, when he accepted a position as director in the Floyd County Extension Service in Charles City. His career also included developing extension services and implementing agriculture education in Iran, Zaria (Nigeria) and Afghanistan. In 1973, he became the U. S. representative to the East African community involving both Tanzania and Kenya. He retired from government service in August 1977.
He is survived by his wife, JoAn Monroe Ramsay of Prescott, Ariz.; a son, James William Ramsay of Lyons, Colo.; a daughter, Janet Ann Ramsay Burt of Interlochen, Mich.; a sister, Ella Ramsay Derby of Cave Junction, Ore.; and a granddaughter.
