Aquilla Smith Poffinbarber, son of S. W. and Hannah Smith Poffingbarger, was born in Jefferson county, Iowa, August 29, 1852. When seven years of age he came with the family to Winterset. When twelve years old he moved with the family to a farm in Jefferson township, in which neighborhood he resided until a few days before his death, except five years, he lived in Union county.
He was married to Miss Sarah E. McKinzie Dec. 5th, 1872. To this union were born four children, Mrs. Jennie Baker of Winterset, Lee Poffinbarger of Des Moines, George W. Poffinbarger of Madison county, Robert Poffinbarger, died in boyhood. The wife departed this life Sept. 23, 1909.
His son George lived with and cared for him until he passed away at the home of Charley Johnson, July 6th, 1925, where he received kindly care, at the age of 72 years 10 months and 16 days. Mrs. Johnson made her home with the Poffinbargers from the time she was two years of age until twelve years old.
Smith attended the United Brethern church. He was a good citizen and neighbor.
He leaves to mourn his departure besides his children, six grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. J. W. Armstrong of Neb.; one brother, G. W. Poffinbarger of Winterset; one half-brother, Harry Poffinbarger of Council Bluffs and Frank McKinzie of Winterset and many other relatives and friends.
