WALTER J. PICKENS DIES IN CALIFORNIA

Walter J. Picken, a native of the St. Charles community and a former resident of Winterset, died Dec. 21, at Dinuba, Calif., of a heart attack. He was 67 years of age.

Mr. Picken was born in Warren county, near St. Charles, a son of William J. and Martha Dickey Picken. He lived in Madison county until moving to Des Moines in 1942. He moved to California in 1961 and had been living at Orosi.

He was a veteran of World War I and was a member of the Presbyterian church.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Darlene Maxwell of Orosi, Calif., Mrs. Sherry Frazier of Visalia, Calif., Mrs. Esther Archer of Evergreen, Colo.; two sons, Donald Picken of Denver, Colo., and Jerry Picken of Irahoe, California; a brother, Frank Picken of Des Moines; and four sisters, Mrs. Agnes Holmes, Mrs. Margaret Jones and Mrs. Anna Cline, all of Winterset and Mrs. Carrie Lathrum of St. Charles; and 12 grandchildren.

The body was returned to Des Moines for burial in Chapel Hill gardens.
