Marlin Piatt, Stuart

Marlin Hubert Piatt, 80, of Stuart died of heart failure June 15, 2002 at his home.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 18 at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with the Revs. Les Borsay and Bill Green officiating. Burial was at Penn Center Cemetery, Penn Township, Madison County.

Marlin Piatt was born Oct. 21, 1921 to Lawrence and Mabel (Henkle) Piatt of rural Earlham. He was a 1939 graduate of Earlham High School. On Feb. 14, 1942, he married Phyllis Willrich.

He attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines before entering the Army in August of 1942. Marlin was part of General George C. Patton's Third Army crossing Germany, where he helped rescue the Lippizan stallions at the end of World War II.

He also was involved in farming and managed grain elevators in Dexter, Menlo and West Des Moines. In 1969, the family moved to Arizona, where he worked in real estate and land development. In 1996 he returned to Iowa. He served as weed commissioner for Madison County from 1997 to 1999 and continued to be involved in farming until his death.

His memberships have included Early Chapel Church (Disciples of Christ), Dexter Presbyterian Church, First Christian Church in Phoenix, Ariz., and First Federated Church in Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant grandsons.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Stuart; a son, Russ Piatt (fiancee Ann Dodson) of Earlham; two daughters, Teresa Pinkert (husband Dave) of Big Stone City. S.D., and Susan Ball (husband Ron) of Nevada, Iowa; a brother, Warren Piatt (wife Carol) of Dexter; a sister, Connie Allen (husband Curtis) of Winterset; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Earlham American Legion Post 158 or the First Federated Church Missions in Des Moines.
