JAMES GILLASPIE

James Gillaspie, who died at his Crawford township home on Feb. 15th,1916, was one of the honored citizens of the county. Living before the Civil War on the farm on which he died his home was a county land mark, known near and far for its hospitality. “You are welcome” was the greeting to either friend or stranger when either James Gillaspie or his wife met him at the door. Everybody was “Uncle Jimmy's” friend and he was a friend to everybody.

James Gillaspie came to the United States from Ireland when a young man. He soon came west to Madison county and entered the war when it broke out. He was careful, industrious and a good business man. No reader of The News needs be told about him for his letters under the name of “Veritas” have appeared every two weeks for over thirty years.

Few men have been so honored and respected as James Gillaspie. His death brought sorrow to all Madison County homes.
