Mrs. Sophronia F. Bates, a well known resident of Macksburg, died Tuesday, May 29, at a Winterset Nursing home. She was 89 years of age.
Mrs. Bates was the former Sophronia Francis Eivins, daughter of John and Evoline Smith Eivins. She was born in Clarke county on Feb. 2, 1867.
She is survived by five children, Vern B. Bates and F. Rolland Bates of Macksburg, Lloyd C. Bates of Centerville, Mrs. Goldie Hatfield of Lorimor, and Mrs. Edith Delaplain of Menlo; and two brothers, Wes Eivins of Winterset and Elmver Eivins of Macksburg.
Mrs. Bates was a charter member of the Rebekah lodge at New Plymouth, Idaho, and later transferred her membership to the Macksburg group. She was a member of the Macksburg Methodist church, and the Macksburg garden club, and was active in all of her organizations, until last November, when she entered the hospital for surgery.
Funeral services were held Thursday from the Macksburg Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Clement Rowe. Burial was made in Moon cemetery at Macksburg.
