FARMER DIES IN TRACTOR ACCIDENT
Warren Drake Hurled Into 35-Foot Ravine, Under Vehicles
Warren E. Drake of near Macksburg, was killed Monday afternoon in an accident on the county road in Webster township, one and one-half miles south of the Weidman store and station.
Drake was riding a tractor, hauling a trailer loaded with baled hay, from his farm a mile north of Macksburg to the farm of Mrs. Will Young, near where the accident occurred. The tractor overturned off the west side of the road, spilling him down a perpendicular drop of 35 feet to the bottom of a creek below. The tractor fell directly on top of him, and the load of baled hay landed on top of that. He was probably killed instantly.
The accident was witnessed by his son, William Drake, who was riding on the load of hay and who saved himself by leaping to safety as the mishap occurred, and by Mrs. Douglas Taylor who was approaching the road on the driveway to her farm home.
The death is listed as a highway fatality, the first of 1956 in Madison county.
The accident occurred about 3 p.m. Drake was coming down the steep hill, going north. He appeared to have noticed Mrs. Taylor approaching the road from the east, and may have applied the brakes on the tractor and tried to slow down. The tractor and trailer went out of control, and into the deep ravine. It was necessary to obtain a wrecker to move the vehicles off his body.
Mr. Drake was 67 years of age. He had been a resident of Madison county for 31 years, and was a member of a prominent family in the Webster and Macksburg communities. He was a veteran of World War I.
He was born July 27, 1888, in Norton county, Kansas, a son of William M. and Mary Morse Drake. He lived in Dakota before coming to Madison county 31 years ago.
He was married June 14, 1927, to Jessie E. Young who survives him. He also leaves two children, the son, William, and a daughter, Nellie Ruth, both at home. In addition he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Nina Hart of Webster township and Mrs. Cora Clausen of Dexter; and a brother, Edgar W. Drake of Dexter.
Funeral services were to be held this Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Richards Funeral home in Winterset, conducted by the Rev. W. W. Steinmetz, pastor of the Winterset Methodist church. Burial was to be made in the Moon cemetery at Macksburg.
