Merle "Pete" Peterson, 80, of Winterset died of respiratory failure Feb. 6, 2003, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.
Memeorial services were held Monday, Feb. 10, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset with Pastor Steve Koch officiating. Military rites were performed by American Legion Post 184 and V.F.W. Post 1842, both of Winterset. Burial of the cremains will take place at a later date at Cedar Memorial Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Pete Peterson was born Aug. 20, 1922 in Linn County to Clarence and Selma (Wassmer) Peterson. On Nov. 22, 1957, he married Phylliss Smith in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He resided at Sun Valley Lake before moving to Winterset in 1966. During his working career, he was a flight instructor, commercial pilot, and salesman. Pete was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Lions Club, 3-Coin Club at Montross Pharmacy and Hardee's Coffee Club, all of Winterset. He also was a United States Air Force veteran, serving during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Phylliss of Winterset; three sons, Dennis Peterson of Kansas City, Mo., Robert Ingels of Vancouver, Wash., and William Ingels of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Lesley Hawkins of Ames and Sheri Anderson of Overland Park, Kan.; a sister, Lillian Frantz of Palo; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church Building Fund (Winterset) or the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
