Funeral Held Here Sunday for Youth Who Drowned at Greenfield
Funeral services were held Sunday from the Richards Funeral home in Winterset for Wendell S. Ridout, the 16-year-old Fontanelle high school student, who drowned last Thursday while swimming in Nodaway lake, the Greenfield town water reservoir.
The Rev. Joe E. King conducted the services. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
The boy's death occurred during a Fontanelle school picnic at the lake. Wendell and two other boys decided to take a swim. It was believed that he may have suffered a cramp in the cold water, and shouted to his companions that he could not make it. One of his companions attempted to help him, but failed. His body was recovered three hours later by Fontanelle firemen.
Wendell was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Ridout, formerly of near Winterset, and was born in the Oak Grove neighborhood of Madison county on April 16, 1940. He was a sophomore at the Fontanelle high school, attended the Pleasant Grove church near Fontanelle, and was president of his township 4-H club.
He is survived by his parents; and three brothers, Billie, Raymond, and Gary Ridout, all at home.
