Peter Christian Petersen was born at Des Moines, Sept. 5, 1886. He was received into fellowship with Christ by the sacrament of Holy Baptism at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church, Des Moines. In the same church he also was confirmed, promising to remain true to his God and his church all his life. This solemn promise he has kept. When, later, the family removed to Scott township, Madison county, he became a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran church in Jefferson township and remained a faithful member of this church until the time of his death.
On Sept. 30th, he was killed by the accidental discharge of a shotgun. The days of his life were 37 years and 25 days. He leaves to mourn his untimely death his aged parents, Mr. an Mrs. Andrew Petersen; four brothers: William, Adolf, Rudolf and Theodore; and one sister, Mrs. Anna Doak, all of Scott township.
Mr. Petersen was highly respected in the community, being a loyal citizen of his country, a faithful member of his church, a dutiful son to his parents, a man of high intelligence and a diligent worker. Not only the members of his family and his fellow church members but all who knew him, will miss him. We bow, however, to the will of Almighty God, knowing that whatever God ordains is right, holy His will abideth. Though the death of our brother came without warning, we are convinced that he was not unprepared and that, through faith in His Savior, Jesus Christ, he has entered the heavenly mansions in the Father's house. May the Lord comfort the stricken family with the comfort of His Holy Word.
Funeral services were conducted at the United Presbyterian church in Winterset, by Rev. C. Lilie pastor of Trinity Lutheran church, Jefferson township and the body laid to rest in the Winterset cemetery, Oct. 3rd.

WENT SQUIRREL HUNTING SUNDAY. BODY FOUND ON SIDE OF ROCKY CLIFF
CORONER HOLDS NO INQUEST
Man Had Started Down Bank, Slipped and Gun Went Off. Neighbors Find Body.
Peter Petersen, young Scott township farmer, took his gun Sunday afternoon about one o’clock and went squirrel hunting. He did not come home when it was time to do chores and at dark a search was instituted. He was found dead on the side of a steep rocky cliff, ten feet below his gun. Death had come from the accidental discharge of his twelve gauge single barreled gun.
It is believed by coroner Dr. Fetters, that Petersen was walking along the top of the cliff and slipped, and that in the fall his gun was discharged. The load of shot struck him in his right side below the ribs. The gun evidently was against his body when discharged as the skin was powder marked and the wound was only as large as the shotgun shell. The load ranged downward.
Dr. Fetters says that Petersen probably lived an hour or two after he was shot though the ground did not show that he had struggled. He must have fallen close to the top of the bluff as a squirrel he had killed was found on top of the bluff ten feet above the gun. The accident probably occurred two or three hours after he left the house as the body was cold when found.
Peterson was 37 years old and lived with a brother on the old Mills farm on Middle River. He had eaten dinner with his father and mother and three unmarried brothers at the home in Scott Township and had started hunting on his way home.
The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the United Presbyterian church in Winterset.
