Death of Harris Peters

Harris Peters, for 34 years a resident of Madison county, and grandfather of C. R. Peters and Miss Jessie of this place, died Sunday at the age of 95 years, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Kruse, in Ft. Dodge. Mr. Peters was born in Pennsylvania in 1828 and in 1887 he came to Madison township in this county.

In 1895, he moved to Winterset and lived here four years. In 1902 he was married to Medora Chanderland and moved to St.Charles, where they lived until 1921. Since the death of his wife, he has lived with his daughter, Mrs. Kruse.

He is survived by five sons and daughters, 32 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Young's undertaking parlors and burial was made in Oakland cemetery at Ft. Dodge. Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Peters and Miss Jessie drove to Ft. Dodge to attend the funeral.

Harris Peters was born in Centerville, Center county, Pa., Dec. 28, 1828. In 1849 he was married to Miss Martha Irwin. Nine children were born to this union, five of whom are still living. In 1887 he moved to Madison county, locating in Madison township, where he made his home until 1895, when he removed to Winterset, where he lived until 1899.

He was married in 1902 to Medora Chandler, and in 1903 they moved to St. Charles, where they remained until 1921, when on account of the failing health of Mrs. Peters they moved to the Soldiers’ Home at Marshalltown, where Mrs. Peters died. After the death of his wife, he made his home with a daughter, Mrs. Mary Kruse of Fort Dodge, where he died Sunday, Sept. 2, 1923. Interment was made in Ft. Dodge at the side of the mother of his children.

Mr. Peters was a veteran of the civil war. He was an adherent of the Adventist faith and was a devoted Christian. He leaves five sons and daughters, 32 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren, making 92 descendants in all.
