JOHN HEIMBERGER, Dexter

John Karl Heimberger, 53, of Dexter died Nov. 14, 2006, at his home following a 22-month battle with a brain tumor.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 17, at the First Congregational Church in Stuart with Pastor Matthew Taylor officiating. Burial was at Penn Center Cemetery in rural Earlham.

John Heimberger was born Oct. 8, 1953, in Des Moines to Walter and Lois (DeBoest) Heimberger and was a 1972 graduate of Earlham High School. He continued his education at Iowa State University, graduating in 1976 with a degree in business agriculture. His marriage to Ann Gelhaus of Hubbard took place in Hubbard on Dec. 28, 1991. John was a lifelong farmer and a member of the Madison County Farm Bureau. He served on numerous boards and commissions, including the Madison County Zoning Board and Madison County Conservation Board. Most recently he was a Penn Township clerk. He also was a member of the First Congregational Church in Stuart and served on its board.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Karl and Helen (Myers) Heimberger; his maternal grandparents, Jess and Winifred (Husband) DeBoest; and an infant brother, Kenneth Karl Heimberger.

He is survived by his wife, Ann, of Dexter; one daughter, Pamela, at home; one son, Karl, at home; his parents, Walter and Lois Heimberger of Earlham; and three sisters, Jeani Shepherd of Dallas Center, Julie Naberhaus of Dexter and JoEllen Mueller of Chanhassen, Minn.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Earlham and Redfield.

Funeral services were held for John K. Heimberger on November 17, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Stuart, Iowa.

Pastor Matthew Taylor of the First Congregational Church in Stuart officiated. Organist was Lyle Peasley. Soloist were Katherine Taylor singing “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” and John Bryden who sang “Daddy’s Hands” and Blessed Assurance”.

Pallbearers were Jason Shepherd, Christopher Mueller, Nathan Mueller, Andy Naberhaus, Ben Naberhaus, and Jesse Naberhaus.

John K. Heimberger was born the son of Walter and Lois DeBoest Heimberger on October 8, 1953 in Des Moines, Iowa. John died following a brave 22 month battle with a brain tumor at his home surrounded by his family on November 14, 2006 at the age of 53 years, 1 month and 6 days.

John graduated from Earlham High School in 1972 and then attended Iowa State University, graduating in 1976 with a degree in Business Agriculture. John and Ann Gelhaus of Hubbard, Iowa were married in Hubbard December 28, 1991. John and An welcomed two children into their lives on December 14, 2000. Pamela and Karl arrived at the airport in Minneapolis from Romania and officially became Heimberger’s on that day.

John was a life-long farmer and had a passion for feeding cattle. John also enjoyed gardening, landscaping and planting trees. He remodeled their home in his spare time. John enjoyed trips to Branson, Missouri and especially his “White Water” rafting trips down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.

John was a member of the First Congregational Church in Stuart, the Madison County Farm Bureau, the Madison County Zoning Board, the Madison County Conservation Board, and served on the church board.

John leaves the following family to celebrate his life: wife Ann of Dexter; his children Pamela and Karl at home; his parents, Walter and Lois Heimberger of Earlham; sister Jeani Shepherd and husband Ken of Dallas Center; sister Julie Naberhaus and husband Garry of Dexter; sister JoEllen Mueller and husband Dale of Chanhassen, Minnesota; sister-in-law Joyce Gelhaus of Webster City; and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Karl and Helen (Myers) Heimberger and maternal grandparents Jess and Winifred (Husband) DeBoest; and his infant brother Kenneth Karl Heimberger.

Interment was held at the Penn Center Cemetery of rural Earlham, Iowa. Kuhn Funeral Homes was in charge of arrangements.
