Afton, Burdette Mitchell

Burdette “Skip” G. Mitchell, 87, of Afton died of cardiac arrest Aug. 29, 2002, at his home in Afton.

Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept 6 at Moon cemetery in Macksburg. The Rev. Wayne Henrichs of Thayer will officiate the service with military rites to be conducted by VFW John B. Parks No. 8882 of Afton. Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., Afton, has charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mitchell, son of Julia Ina (Moorhead) and Fred Earl Mitchell, was born Dec. 24, 1914 in Linden. He was educated in Guthrie County. He was a farmer in Guthrie County near Menlo until moving south of Murray in 1967. In 1973 he moved south of Afton where he continued to farm until his retirement in 1977. After retirement he helped a farmer near Hopeville. He was a World War II veteran in the U.S. Army from Aug. 6, 1941 to Oct. 4, 1945.

Survivors include three sisters, Gertrude Campbell of Redfield, Ruth Mains of Dexter and Beverly Jean Kirkendall of Monroe and a sister-in-law, Doris Mitchell of Afton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wayne in infancy and Irven Mitchell June 6, 2002; three sisters, Blanche in infancy, Thelma Wooldridge and Bernita Dygert.
