Page 1Death of Mrs. Jos. Thompson
Mrs. Joseph Thompson, who has been in poor health for several months, died Saturday, April 17th, at her home in the northeast part of Winterset. Mrs. Thompson was 70 years of age and was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Longnecker. She was born in Elkhart county, Indiana, October 31, 1858. At the age of 12 years, she, with her mother and brothers, came by team to Iowa, settling in Buena Vista county. In October, 1876, she was married to Leondas Violet, and they were the parents of two children, Carrie Myrtle and Dewey Cecil. In 1881, Mr. Violet died.
Ten years later she was married to Joseph S. Thompson, and acted as mother to his five children: George Walter, Clarissa Belle, who later died; David Hickman, Joseph Lester, and Hattie Eileen. One child, Verdie Mabin was born to Mr. and Mrs. Thompson.
Mrs. Thompson had lived in Dallas and Madison counties most of the time since her marriage, with the exception of a year in Colorado, and seven years in Appanoose county, Iowa. Early in her life she united with the Christian church of De Soto, later moving her membership to the Church of Christ, of Winterset.
Mrs. Thompson is survived by her husband, Mrs. Carrie McDonald, George and Hickman Thompson, all of Madison county; Rev. Dewey Violet, of Harlem, Montana; Joe L. Thompson and Mrs. Hattie Scott, of Centerville; Mrs. Verdie Van Den Berg, of Minneapolis. She also leaves three brothers, Joe Longnecker, of Arispie; Isaac, of Omaha, and Andy, of Canon City, Colorado; two half-brothers, Charles and George Saumer, and 19 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The Rev. F. Clare McCallon conducted the funeral services Monday, April 29th at the Church of Christ and burial was made in the North River Cemetery.
