Mrs. Merritt McCorkle Dies

Mrs. Louvisa McCorkle, who had been a resident of Madison county for many years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bertha McDonald, on Sunday, December 1st, at the age of 81 years. The deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Skinner, and was born January 25, 1848, near Adamsville, Ohio. They came to this county when she was a young girl, and here she was married to Merritt McCorkle, March 25, 1890. They lived for many years on the home farm in Jackson township, and in September, 1906, they moved to Earlham. In 1927, Mr. and Mrs. McCorkle went to make their home with their daughter, Mrs. McDonald.

She is survived by her husband, a son, Calvin, of Auburn, Illinois; a daughter, Mrs. Bertha McDonald, and two sons, Lloyd McCorkle, of De Soto, and Walter McCorkle, of Pitzer. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Nugent and Mrs. Matilda Ohlen, of Columbus, Ohio.

Rev. W. C. Porter conducted the funeral services at the Pitzer church, Tuesday afternoon, December 3d, and burial was made in the Pitzer cemetery.

Mrs. Louvisa McCorkle

Louvisa Skinner, daughter of John C. and Isabell Lindsey Skinner, was born January 25, 1848, near Adamsville, Muskingham county, Ohio, and died December 1, 1929, aged 81 years, 10 months and 6 days.

She was married to Merritt H. McCorkle March 25, 1890. To this union was born one son, Calvin Merritt. They lived on the home farm in Jackson township until September, 1906, when they moved to Earlham, where they resided until in 1923, when they went to make their home with their daughter, Mrs. Bertha McDonald, near Waukee. In the spring of 1927, they, with the McDonald family, moved to a farm west of Earlham.

Her early life was spent in and near Columbus, Ohio, where she was engaged for many years as a tailoress. In early life she united with the United Presbyterian church and remained a faithful and consistent member until her death. On coming to her new home, she united with the Pitzer United Presbyterian church, and on moving to Earlham, her membership was transferred to the Presbyterian church.

She was a faithful loving wife and a most kind and devoted mother to the three children in the home, and always had a deep interest in them and their families, along with that of her own son.

Besides her husband she leaves to mourn her departure her son, Calvin, and family, of Auburn, Indiana; Mrs. Bertha McDonald and children, of Earlham; Lloyd McCorkle and family, of De Soto; Walter McCorkle and family, of Pitzer; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Nugent and Mrs. Matilda Ohlen, of Columbus, Ohio, and a host of friends and neighbors.

ANOTHER OLD RESIDENT GONE

Mrs. M. H. McCorkle Passed Away December 1, at the Home of Her Daughter

Mrs. M. H. McCorkle passed away December 1st at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bertha E. McDonald, northwest of town.

Mr. and Mrs. McCorkle were well known in Earlham having lived here eighteen years.

At one o’clock December 3rd short services were held in the home, conducted by Rev. Bernice Riddle, assisted in song by Mrs. Alma Mapes and Mrs. Gertrude Conrad, this being the same service that was held in the home just five weeks previous for Mr. McDonald.

The funeral was held at the Pitzer United Presbyterian church, conducted by the pastor Ray Porter of Winterset, assisted by Rev. Bock, of Earlham, Mrs. Harry Foster, of Earlham sang a beautiful solo, “The City Foursquare.” The rest of the singing was by the Pitzer choir.

The pall bearers were old neighbors in the Pitzer neighborhood and interment was in the Jackson township cemetery.

Her son Calvin was unable to attend the funeral, but he and his family had visited her several days in October.

Her half brother’s son, Hiram Skinner, of Stuart and his daughter Mrs. Stella Wetrick, of Dexter were in attendance at the service in the home.
