JOHN MCANDREW IS DEAD

Was Pioneer Citizen and Merchant, Prominent in G.A.R. Affairs

John McAndrew passed away at 8 o'clock this morning, after a long and painful illness from that most dreaded of all diseases, cancer. He made a heroic effort to throw off the disease but on learning that there was no hope for recovery, awaited the end with true christian fortitude and resignation. He was one of the early settlers of this county, was twice elected sheriff of Madison county. For many years he was engaged in the mercantile business here and retired from business about five years ago.

Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church at 2 p.m. Friday. Pitzer Post G.A.R. of which he was a past commander, will have charge of the services at the church, and the Masonic fraternity will conduct the services at the grave.

More details of his life will be published in this paper next week.

John McAndrew

John McAndrew was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Sept. 7, 1839, whither his parents had immigrated from Ireland a few years previously. The family, in 1856, came west and settled on a claim near the west line of Warren county, it being in the vicinity of the place where the Rock Island railroad crosses the C. B. & Q. road. At that time John was 17 years old and in 1860, he with twenty two others, went to the Rocky Mountains. They crossed the plains with ox team.

While absent from home, his father died and he returned to take charge of the farm, which he managed until August, 1862, when in obedience to his country’s call, he enlisted as a soldier in the war for the union. The company to which he belonged was Co. H of the 34th Iowa and was composed of Warren County men, principally. He was immediately assigned to responsible place of ‘orderly sergeant’ of his company, and was afterward commissioned 2d lieutenant., and then 1st lieutenant and finally was acting captain of the company. He served his country for more than three years, or until the close of the war.

When he returned, he settled at Indianola, where he remained three years, then moved to Des Moines, where he lived three years. When Mr. Heimer opened up the Winterset flouring mills, Mr. McAndrew came here with him, and worked there until he accepted a position in the grocery business of Crawford & Son, where he remained till elected sheriff in 1883. He was reelected in 1885 and at the close of his term of office, engaged in the grocery business, which he followed continuously till a few years ago, when on account of age he retired from active business. While County Sheriff, and when in business, he was chief of the fire department 14 years, was commander of Pitzer Post ten years and mayor of the city four years.

He was first married on Oct. 8, 1865 to Ms. Margaret Young of Shelbyville, Ind., who died March 16, 1900. He was again married June 7, 1910 to Mrs. Savannah Bell of St. Charles. They had one child named Alice, who became the wife of W. C. Hudson, of Winterset, but in recent years of Harlan, Iowa. She died July 25, 1911. There is one grandchild, a namesake, John M. Hudson of Harlan.

About a year and a half ago, Mr. McAndrew became afflicted with an incurable cancer the ravages of which malignant disease he bore with courage and patience. He died last Wednesday morning, Nov. 25th. The funeral was held at the Methodist Church Friday conducted by Rev. W. G. Hohanshelt. Ritual ceremony by the Masons and G. A. R.
