Walter "Fon" Porter, 83, of St. Charles, died of respiratory ailment Oct. 17, 1995 at the Urbandale Care Center. Funeral services were Oct. 20 at the Calvary Baptist Church in St. Charles. The Rev. Doug Helton of St. Charles officiated the services and burial was at the St. Charles cemetery.

He was born near Peru on Feb. 19, 1912 to Samuel M. and Sadie (Leggett) Porter. He married Jean Fenimore on Aug. 2, 1934 in Osceola. He was a farmer and had lived in the rural Truro area most of his lifetime. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in St. Charles.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant daughter; one brother; one sister, and one grandson.

Surviving relatives include his wife; five sons, Lowell Porter and wife Jean of Russell, Ky., Lavernne Porter and wife Marilyn of Omaha, Nebr., Leroy Porter and wife Deanna of Milwaukee, Wisc., Stephen Porter and wife Elaine of St. Charles, and Timothy Porter and wife Becky of Peru; four daughters, Jean Epp and husband Carl of Mt. Vernon, Wash., Joy Isaac of St. Charles, Linda Wall and husband Tim of Glendive, Mont., and Connie Johnston and husband Larry of Poplar, Mont.; two brothers, Merrill Porter of Omaha, Nebr. and Claude Porter of Redding, Calif.; two sisters, Ethel Bates of Winterset and Nellie Parker of St. Charles; 28 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

W. ‘FON’ PORTER

Walter “Fon” Porter, son of Samuel M. and Sadie Leggett Porter, was born Feb. 19, 1912, at Peru and died Oct. 17, 1995, at the Urbandale Care Center. He was 83.

As a young man, Mr. Porter attended country schools near Peru and graduated from Truro High School in 1932.

Mr. Porter lived most of his life on the same farm, northwest of Truro. He was a charter member of Deer Creek Chapel and has been a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in St. Charles for the past 24 years where he has served as deacon and Sunday School teacher.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, his parents, a brother, a sister and a grandson.

Mr. Porter is survived by his wife, Jean; five sons, Lowell Porter and his wife, Jean Porter, of Russell, Ky., Laverne Porter and his wife Marilyn Porter, of Omaha, Neb., LeRoy Porter and his wife, Deanna Porter, of Milwaukee, Wis., Stephen Porter and his wife, Elaine Porter, of St. Charles and Timothy Porter and his wife, Becky Porter, of Peru, four daughters, Jean Epp and her husband, Carl Epp, of Mount Vernon, Wash., Joy Isaac of St. Charles, Linda Wall and her husband, Tim Wall, of Glendine, Mont., Connie Johnston and her husband, Larry Johnston, of Poplar, Mont.; two brothers, Merrill Porter of Omaha, and Claude Porter of Redding , Calif.; two sisters, Ethel Bates of Winterset and Nellie Parker of St. Charles, 28 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services for Mr. Porter were Oct. 20 at the Calvary Baptist Church in St. Charles, Pastor Doug Helton officiating. Rob Porter, organist, accompanied LeRoy and Deanna Porter as they sang He the Pearly Gates Will Open and Under His Wings and the congregation as they sang When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder.

Casket bearers were Richard Porter, Gregory Isaac, Jerry Wall, Rod Wall, Chad Porter, Michael Porter, Jeffrey Isaac, Tony Wall, Shane Johnston and Matthew Porter. Interment was in the St. Charles Cemetery. Arrangements were by Kale Funeral Homes of Osceola and Truro.
