Page 1An Old Citizen Gone
Mr. Nelson Finney, one of the old and most respected citizens of Winterset died at his residence Sunday evening, February 3, 1901, after a long and somewhat gradual decline. Mr. Finney was born in Ohio, in March 1821, where he lived his early life, in 1854 he emigrated to Iowa and settled in Adair county, and in 1869 removed to Madison county, where he lived the most part of his life, part of the time on a farm and part in Winterset.
Mr. Finney was twice married. His first wife was Matilda Bowersmith, who bore him eleven children, four sons and seven daughters, all of whom are living and have families. After the death of his first wife, he married Mrs. Alice Cooley, who survives him.
Mr. Finney was a prominent and exemplary member of the Christian church, and also belonged to the Odd Fellows, under the auspices of which order he was buried. The funeral was held at the Christian church Tuesday afternoon, the discourse being by the pastor, Rev. L. E. Follansbee. He was buried in the Winterset cemetery by the side of the wife of his youth.

Nelson Finney was born in Franklin county, New York, March 20, 1821 and died at his home in Winterset, Sunday evening, Feb. 3, 1901; aged 79 years, 11 months.
His early manhood was spent in Ohio where he was married in 1842 to Matilda Bowersmith. Eleven children were born to them, all of whom, with one exception, lived and had families. He moved to Adair county, Iowa in 1854 and in 1869 came to Madison county, where he has since resided. His wife died in 1895 and he was again married in Washington, Iowa, to Mrs. Alice Cooley who survives him. He was a member of the Christian church and also of the I.O.O.F.
His funeral service was conducted by Rev. Follansbee Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Christian church under the auspices of the I.O.O.F.

Nelson Finney was born in Franklin county, New York, March 20, 1821 and died Sunday evening, February 3, 1901 in Winterset, Iowa aged 79 years and 11 months.
He lived in Ohio during his early manhood, where he married Matilda Bowensmith and to them were born eleven children. Ten of these children live and have families. In 1895 he buried his first wife and afterwards married Mrs. Alice Cooley at Washington, Iowa. He came to Iowa in 1854.
He was a member of the Christian church and also of the I.O.O.F. Madison lodge No. 136.
His funeral was conducted by Rev. Follansbee at the Christian church on Tuesday afternoon and under the auspices of the I.O.O.F. fraternity. He was buried in the Winterset cemetery.
