Merl E. Nellis, Earlham

Services for Merl E. Nellis, 90, Earlham, who died Aug. 25 at Des Moines General Hospital, were held Thursday, Aug. 28, at Earlham Friends Church with the Rev. Eldon Cole officiating. Burial was at the Penn Center Cemetery.

Born at Wilton Junction on Oct. 23, 1895, he was the son of Robert L. and Julia A. Nellis.

He graduated from Earlham High School and attended Iowa State, later serving in World War I. On Dec. 27, 1928, he was married to Martha E. Christensen at Oskaloosa and the couple had three children, Howard, Winifred and Bonnie.

They moved to the family farm in the Penn Center area in 1929. Mr. Nellis was a farmer, an insurance salesman, culled chickens for hatcheries and was among those chosen to be a judge for a national poultry exhibit.

He was a birthright member of the Earlham Friends Church. He had been a resident at the Bethesda Care Center in Winterset for the past two years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers. His survivors are his wife, Martha; his children, Howard and Ellen Nellis of Wichita, Kan., Winifred and Clarence Johnson of Winterset and Bonnie and Max Arnburg of Ankeny; seven grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and 15 step great-grandchildren.

Merl Edward Nellis, son of Robert L. and Julia A. Nellis, was born October 23, 1895 at Wilton Junction, Iowa and passed away August 25, 1986 at the Des Moines General Hospital.

Merl graduated from Earlham High School and attended college in Ames, Iowa, after which he served his country in World War I. On December 27, 1928 Merl was united n marriage to Martha E. Christensen at Oskaloosa and to this union were born three children—Howard, Winifred and bonnie. They moved to the family farm in the Penn Center area in 1929. Merl was a farmer, an insurance salesman, culled chickens for hatcheries and was among those chosen to be a judge for a National Poultry Exhibit. He also loved gardening and growing hybrid iris and gladiolus.

Merl was a birthright member of the Earlham Friends Church, a loving husband, father and grandfather and he enjoyed spending time with his family. He had been a resident at the Bethesda Care Center in Winterset for the last two years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Clinton, Ward, Roy and Earl. His survivors are his wife Martha; his children, Howard and Ellen Nellis, of Wichita, Kansas, Winifred and Clarence Johnson, of Winterset, and Bonnie and Max Arnburg, of Ankeny; seven grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; five great grandchildren; 15 step great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Roy (Alta) Nellis and Mrs. Earl (Louise) Nellis; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, August 28, 1986 at Earlham Friends Church, Earlham, Iowa, with Reverend Eldon Cole officiating. Irene Cole provided organ and solo music. Pallbearers were Duane Nellis, Robert Kelley, Wesley Nellis, Darrell Harden, Phillip Hoffman, Thomas Atkins and David Atkins. Interment was in Penn Center Cemetery, Earlham, Iowa.
