Louise E. Nellis, Earlham

Services for Louise E. Nellis, 94, Earlham, who died July 19 at the Earlham Manor Care Center, were held Wednesday, July 22 at the Earlham Friends Church with the Rev. Eldon Cole officiating. Burial was at the Earlham Cemetery.

Born July 20, 1892 in Earlham, she was the daughter of James E. and Mary Rebeccah Bowers Thornton. She attended Earlham schools, graduating from the Academy in 1911. She taught school for a short time in Ankeny.

She was married to Earl E. Nellis of Earlham on Oct. 3, 1913. They had been married for 60 years at the time of Earl's death in 1973.

They farmed in the Earlham area and then moved to Woodward, in 1931, farming there until 1963 when they retired and returned to Earlham.

Mrs. Nellis was a member of the Earlham Friends Church for 70 years. She was very active in the church's Dorcas Missionary Society as well as the WCTU. She was an avid quilt maker.

Survivors include brothers, Rev. Niol O. Thornton of Crandon, Wis., and the Rev. Clarence W. Thornton of Clearwater; sisters-in-law, Alta Nellis of Des Moines and Martha Nellis of Earlham.

Louise Elizabeth Nellis, the daughter of James E. and Mary Rebeccah (Bowers) Thornton was born July 20, 1892 in Earlham, Iowa. She passed away July 19, 1987 at the Earlham Manor Care Center in Earlham, Iowa.

She attended Earlham schools, graduating from the Academy in 1911. She taught school for a short time in Ankeny.

She was united in marriage on October 3, 1913 to Earl E. Nellis of Earlham, Iowa. They were married in the home of the bride’s parents in Earlham. They had been married for 60 years at the time of Earl’s death in 1973.

They farmed in the Earlham area before moving to Woodward, Iowa in 1931. They farm there until 1963 when they retired and returned to Earlham.

Louise was a member of the Earlham Friends Church for 70 years. She was very active in the churches Dorcas Missionary Society as well as the WCTU. She was involved in many other church activities. One of her favorites was quilt making. Many of her quilts were used in missionary projects and many quilts were sent to Quakerdale.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Merl, who died at the age of four and her husband.

Survivors include two brothers, Rev. Niol O. Thornton of Crandon, Wisconsin, and Rev. Clarence W. Thornton of Clearwater, Florida; two sisters-in-law, Alta Nellis of Des Moines, Iowa and Martha Nellis of Earlham, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, as well as a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, July 22, 1987 at the Earlham Friends Church, Earlham, Iowa with Reverend Eldon Cole officiating. Irene Cole provided organ music. Pallbearers were James O. Thornton, William C. Packard, Clarence F. Johnson, Darrell D. Thornton, Robert W. Wright and Delbert L. Nellis. Interment was in Earlham Cemetery, Earlham, Iowa.

LOUISE E. NELLIS

EARLHAM, IA. – Louise Elizabeth Nellis, 94, of Earlham died of a heart attack Sunday at Earlham Care Center. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Earlham Friends Church. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery.

Mrs. Nellis was born in Earlham. She had been a homemaker and a member of Earlham Friends Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Niol Thornton of Crandon, Wis., and Clarence Thornton of Clearwater, Fla.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. today at McKee Funeral Home here, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to her church or Quakerdale Homes.
