DRAKE TRACK COACH DIES AT 56

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Gary Osborn, the women's track and cross country coach at Drake and a member of the university's coaching staff for 32 years, has died of a heart attack.

Osborn, 56, died Sunday morning at his home in Truro, a Drake spokesman said. He had been the longest-serving track coach in the Missouri Valley Conference.

A former Drake athlete, Osborn became an assistant coach at the school after graduating in 1968. He was named women's cross country coach in 1989 and was appointed women's track coach in 1993.

His cross country teams won Missouri Valley Conference championships in 1994, 1995 and 1998. He was the league's coach of the year three times and was named Gateway Conference coach of the year in 1989.

Osborn was a five-time state champion in track at Winterset High School and was a seven-time placewinner at Missouri Valley Conference meets while at Drake, competing in the hurdles and sprints.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Winterset.

Osborn is survived by his wife, Marilyn, three sons, a granddaughter and his mother, Vi Osborn, of Winterset.

Gary Irvin Osborn, 56, of rural Truro died May 21, 2000, of a heart attack at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, May 24) at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with the Rev. Skip Rushing officiating. Burial was at Montpelier Cemetery near Patterson.

Gary Osborn was born Feb. 19, 1944, to Irvin Jed "Tim" and Viola Mae (Foster) Osborn of Winterset. He was a 1962 graduate of Winterset High School and a 1967 graduate of Drake University in Des Moines. He received his master's degree from Drake in 1970. He married Marilyn Harpole on Sept. 4, 1965, in Winterset. He grew up in Winterset, living in Des Moines during his adult life. He had recently moved to rural Clarke County. Gary was a track coach and tenured assistant professor at Drake University in Des Moines. He had been employed by Drake since 1968. He was a member of the Track and Field of America/USA, Drake Relays Executive Committee and New Virginia United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his wife; his mother of Winterset; three sons, Tim Osborn (wife Amy Beth) of Tulsa, Okla., Brett T. Osborn (wife Kristen) of Windsor Heights and Bryce J. Osborn (wife Anna) of Des Moines; a brother, Scott Osborn (wife Kathy) of Ankeny; two sisters, Karna Dougherty (husband Pat) of Madrid and Shelley Dickinson (husband Scott) of Des Moines; and one granddaughter.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
