MORTUARY - Thomas Greer

One more life has gone out with the tide. One more race has been run.

Thomas Greer, son of Thomas and Sarah Greer was born near Brockville, Ontario, Canada, January 27, 1849 and died at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Chaney in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, September 11, 1932 age 83 years, 7 months and 24 days.

He was married to Sarah Kirkland April 7, 1876. To this union three children were born: J. L. Greer of Omaha; Mrs. E. M Chaney of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Effie who died when a small child.

Mr. Greer was of a family of ten children all but three having preceded him in death. Those remaining are James Greer and W. W. Greer of Winterset, and Mrs. John Rippey of Coon Rapids. Mr. Greer was one of the pioneer settlers of Iowa, coming to Madison county in 1867, when timber covered its hills and blue stem its prairies. He remained for only a short time and returned to Canada. In 1870 with the family he moved to Iowa and settled in Lincoln township where he resided until his marriage in 1876, when he moved to a farm near Macksburg, later moving to Winterset. In 1894 the family moved to Omaha where he lived for twenty years. When on account of poor health he gave up his work and has since lived with his daughter and husband in South Dakota.

Mr. Greer was a charter member of Madison lodge I.O.O.F. No. 136 of Winterset and although living out of the state for almost forty years still retained his membership at Winterset. He leaves to mourn their loss a faithful wife, two children, a son-in-law and daughter-in-law (who were as his own children), three grandchildren, one sister and two brothers.

Funeral services were held at the Ramsey-Richards funeral home at 2 o'clock Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. A. P. Keast. Burial was in the Macksburg cemetery.

THOMAS GREER DIES AT SOUTH DAK. HOME

Thomas Greer died Monday morning at 6:30 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 85. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock at Ramsey-Richards funeral home, and burial was in the Macksburg cemetery.

He was born near Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and in 1870 came with his parents to Lincoln township in Madison county. he was married to Sarah Kirkland, daughter of Thomas Kirkland, and thirty years ago they moved to Omaha. From there they went to Sioux Falls where Mr. Greer and his son-in-law entered the fruit business. While living in Madison county, he was custodian of the court house.

Mr. Greer is survived by his wife and daughter, his sister, Mrs. John Rippey of Coon Rapids, and two brothers, Will and James of Winterset.
