DEWITT M. BASS Died Saturday

DeWitt M. Bass, a retired farmer well known in this community for many years, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1954, at Madison County Memorial hospital, after a brief illness. He was 87 years of age, and had been in failing health for some time.

Mr. Bass was a native of Illinois, where he was born Dec. 30, 1866, a son of William and Emily Bass. In 1869 he came with his parents to this county, and the remainder of his life was spent here.

He was married Sept. 19, 1893, at Churchville, to Miss Mary E. Smith. Most of their married life was spent together in the community just west of Winterset.

Mr. and Mrs. Bass were parents of six sons, two of whom Edward and Francis, preceded their parents in death. Mrs. Bass' death occurred in 1950.

Surviving are four sons, George, Charles, William and Gene Bass, all of Winterset; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. J. J. Judge. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
