J. W. SAWHILL, 86, Died On Tuesday

J. W. Sawhill, a pioneer resident of Jackson township, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1953, at Madison county Memorial hospital in Winterset. He was 86 years of age.

James Wallace Sawhill was one of the prominent farmers of Madison county over a long period of years. He also engaged in business at Canon City, Colo., where he lived for several years, and served as director of the Farmers and Merchants State bank of Winterset. Since retiring from active farming he had made his home in Wintersest.

Mr. Sawhill was born in Dubuque county on March 4, 1867, a son of Rev. James and Martha Wallace Sawhill. As a boy, he came with his parents to Madison county. After attending Dexter Normal school, he began farming in Jackson township when he was 20 years of age. In 1907, he moved to Canon City, Colo., where he engaged in fruit farming and operated a grocery store. He returned to Madison county after a few years, and again engaged in farming here.

Mr. Sawhill was married Feb. 12, 1890, to Carrie E. George of Jackson township, who survives him.

He was an active member of the United Presbyterian church.

In addition to his wife, he leaves five children, Ray Sawhill of LaHabra, Calif., Mrs. Bessie Gillespie and Gaylord Sawhill of Winterset, George Sawhill of Flint, Mich., and Mrs. D. K. Dilts of Canon City, Colo.

Funeral services for Mr. Sawhill will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock from the United Presbyterian church in Winterset with the Rev. Samuel C. Pickens officiating. Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.
