Prof. C. Lothrop Smith, a former Winterset resident who had been a member of the chemistry faculty at the State University of Iowa at Iowa City for many years, died Monday, Dec. 26, 1949 after an extended illness. He was 43 years of age.

He attended the Winterset schools and graduated from the Winterset high school as an honor student with the class of 1924. He received his B. A. degree from Grinnell college in 1928, his master's degree there in 1929, and his doctor's degree in 1931 from the State university.

He remained at the University as a member of the chemistry faculty, rising to the rank of professor and head of the division of analytical and inorganic chemistry.

During the war he was one of the scientists called by the government to work on the atomic bomb project, and spent many years in that work.

He is survived by his wife; a son; and his father, all of Iowa City.

Memorial services were held this Wednesday from the First Presbyterian church in Iowa City.
