Matilda E. Small

Matilda E. Kennedy Small, daughter of James and Elinor Kennedy was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Jan. 15, 1844 and departed this life March 29, 1923, age 79 years 2 months and 13 days. Mrs. Small came with her family to Iowa in March 1873. She was joined in marriage to David Small, April 23, 1885 by Dr. Henry Wallace. This union was only of brief duration as Mr. Small died July 24, 1888.

In the family of James and Elinor Kennedy there were four children. James Jr. died when 16 years of age at Hebron, Ind.; John F. died at Hanford, Calif., March 22d, just one week before the death of Mrs. Small; Hannah Davis, sister and Joseph Kennedy, brother, both of Winterset, remain to mourn her loss.

When a young girl in Hebron, Ind., Mrs. Small united with the United Presbyterian church. On coming to Iowa, she transferred her membership to the Montpelier congregation near Patterson. A few years later, on coming to Winterset they transferred to this church, remaing a faithful and earnest worker and a consistent Christian until her death. On her deathbed, she looked forward to her transition confidently and hopefully, making her arrangements for her funeral as calmly as though she was going to visit to another city. Her funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. March 30th in the United Presbyterian church. The sermon was preached by Rev. S. J. Malone and the body laid to rest in Winterset cemetery.
