A granddaughter of pioneer Madison County residents Caleb and Ruth Clark, Ada Mae Hoots died Wednesday, January 21, 1976 at Ramsey Memorial Home in Des Moines. She was 88 years old, a resident in Des Moines since 1960.
Born January 17, 1888, Ada Hoots was the daughter of Frank Clark and Mary Bayer Clark. Her father was the youngest son of Caleb and Ruth Clark.
Mrs. Hoots' early education was received from the Winterset schools and was interrupted during high school in 1901 when the family moved to the country. After her father's death in 1924 she completed high school and entered Drake University where she graduated with a B.A. degree in Library Science in 1930.
United with the Christian Church after her baptism on February 12, 1900, Mrs. Hoots later used her college degree to become church librarian of the University Christian Church in Des Moines. She was a member of that congregation since June 1951.
The marriage of Ada Hoots to James F. Hoots took place at the home of her parents in Lincoln Township of Madison County on December 19, 1909. The couple lived in Douglas Township until Mr. Hoots retired from farming. He preceded his wife in death August 6, 1913.
Mrs. Hoots is credited with compiling The History of the Clark Family which was published in 1937. She also wrote a history of the Winterset Christian Church.
Surviving Mrs. Hoots are several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, ons sister and one brother.
Funeral services for Ada Mae Hoots were conducted Friday, January 23, 1976 at 1:30 p.m. from the Winterset First Christian Church, the Rev. Eldon Jandebeur presiding. Burial was made at the Winterset Cemetery.
