HENRY LEVEKE

Henry Leveke was born in Germany June 11, 1847 and departed this life Nov. 8th, at the age of 71 years, 4 months and 27 days.

The deceased came to this country when 20 years of age. He worked at his trade, that of a stone mason, on the state capitol and in this county for a number of years. On March 19, 1871, he married Rosena Augustine, who preceded him to the better world just ten years ago this month. After his marriage he settled on a farm in Adair county where the family resided until about 16 years ago, when they came to Winterset to make their home.

To this union were born ten children, one dying in infancy, the oldest son, Fred, passing away in March, 1910. The following children besides eight grandchildren, remain: Mrs. C. H. Kamphoefner, Sioux City, Iowa; Mrs. J. H. Kleinschmidt, St. Louis, Mo.; Henry G., of Madison county; Mrs. S. M. Jollife, Villisca, Iowa; Mrs. Rose Minshall, Sac City, Iowa; Ernest of Des Moines, Harry of Adair county, Mrs. F. D. Layne, Villisca. All of these were present at the funeral, which occurred on Sunday afternoon in the Methodist church. The service was conducted by his pastor, Rev. Jackson Giddens.

On Jan. 1, 1912, Mr. Leveke was married to Clara E. Perkins, who was to him a loving companion during his later years, and who survives to mourn his loss.

The deceased was born in a Godly home and as soon as he came to this country, he identified himself with the church. During a period of over 50 years, he was an official in the Methodist church being either Sunday school superintendent or Bible class teacher also. The church found a large place in his heart and its interests always received his consideration. In civic life, he also took an interest, serving for quite a number of years as president of the school board, and on the town council.

Seventeen years ago, a severe illness left him with a weakened heart, but he kept in fairly good health during these years. He passed away suddenly while sitting in a chair in his home.
