Mrs. E. D. Hartley, a life-long resident of Madison county, died at her home in Winterset Tuesday morning. She was 83 years of age, and had been in failing health the last year.
Mrs. Hartley was the former LaVerna Ellen Smith, daughter of Mathias J. and Mary Rogan Smith. She was born near Early Chapel on Dec. 19, 1870. Her mother died when she was young, and her father later re-married. Her step-mother was Dr. Jessie V. Smith, well known Winterset physician.
She was married to E. D. Hartley on Oct. 10, 1898. Their entire married life was spent in or near Winterset.
Surviving are two sons, Jno. N. Hartley, Winterset attorney and Edward J. Hartley of Union township. She also leaves five grandchildren, Mary Catharine, Edward J. Jr., and Diane of Union township, and John Kevin and Michaelyn N. Hartley of Winterset. Also surviving are two brothers and a sister, A. S. Smith of Sac City, William Smith of Arizona and Mrs. Catherine Danforth of Key Largo, Fla.
Funeral services will be held this Thursday at 9 a.m. from St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. J. J. Judge. Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.
