LOYD MASON of Winterset Dies

Heart attack Fatal Thursday to Retired Automobile Dealer Here

Loyd Edward Mason, well known Winterset resident, died last Thursday night, June 14th, 1956, at the Madison county Memorial hospital, after a brief illness at the age of 63 years. He suffered the heart attack, late Thursday afternoon, and was taken to the hospital, where he died, shortly before midnight.

Born in Marion county, Iowa, September 24, 1892, he was the eldest son of Milton and Katherine Carpenter Mason. His boyhood days were spent in and near Pleasantville, and he moved to Des Moines with his parents in 1911.

He was married to Etta Ilo McCollum of West Des Moines, December 24, 1912, and they were the parents of a daughter, who died in infancy. Mr. Mason was employed by the Herring Motor company, in Des Moines, until in October 1925, when they moved to Winterset. He bought the Ford automobile business here, known as the Winterset Motor company, and they continued to operate it, until June 1, 1953, when they retired because of Mr. Mason's health.

Loyd, as he was familiarly known, was active in Winterset and Madison county community affairs; he joined the Pioneer Masonic lodge in Des Moines, when a young man. After he came here, he became a member of the First Presbyterian church, and at one time was president of the Winterset Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member at one time of the Winterset Rotary club, and was active in the organizing and building of the Lakeview Country club.

Survivors include his wife, Ilo, his mother, Mrs. Katherine Mason of Des Moines, four sisters and one brother: Mrs. Roy Polson of Wellman, Mrs. Alex Fidler of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Clifford Pitts of Waukeegan, Illinois, Mrs. Clarence Sweeney of Winterset, and Elmer Mason of Des Moines. He also leaves a number of nieces and nephews. His father preceded him in death, dying in July 1944.

The Rev. George DeF. Fisher, pastor, conducted his funeral services, at the First Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon, at 2:30 p.m. and burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
